Batting all-rounder Cooper Connolly, aged 22, has been lauded by Punjab Kings’ spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule as a promising talent with the right qualities to excel at the highest level. Connolly’s impressive performance, including an unbeaten 107 off 59 balls in a recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, has showcased his growing potential, despite Punjab Kings suffering their third consecutive loss this season.
Although Connolly also bowls left-arm spin, he has not bowled in IPL 2026 due to a back issue managed by Cricket Australia. Bahutule praised Connolly’s positivity, potential, and team spirit, foreseeing a long career for him in Australian cricket. The coach highlighted Connolly’s adaptability as an overseas player in India, performing exceptionally well at a young age across various venues and pitches.
Bahutule acknowledged that dropped catches, including by Connolly, Shashank Singh, and Lockie Ferguson, proved costly for Punjab Kings in their match against SRH. The missed opportunities allowed Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen to capitalize, with Bahutule emphasizing the importance of executing plans and the impact of fielding lapses on the game’s momentum. Despite the setbacks, Bahutule expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back and emphasized the need for reflection and improvement in fielding strategies.
Fielding under lights posed additional challenges, according to Bahutule, who highlighted the technical aspects of catching under such conditions. He stressed the importance of players understanding the nuances of fielding under lights and executing their skills effectively to overcome the difficulties posed by the playing environment.
