Punjab’s New and Renewable Energy Minister announced the launch of ‘Mukhya Mantri Roshan Punjab Yojna’ to brighten villages with solar-powered LED streetlights, costing Rs 550 crore. This initiative aims to install over 3 lakh solar LED lights across Punjab, making it a significant rural lighting project. The State Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, approved this program to provide reliable and cost-effective lighting in villages.
The project will be executed by the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) in phases from June to October 2026. It follows a revised funding model with 70% state government and 30% gram panchayat contributions. Minister Arora emphasized the benefits of solar streetlights, including zero electricity costs, reliability, and suitability for rural areas. This initiative addresses the historical lack of streetlights in villages over the past 70 years, ensuring all lights come with a seven-year maintenance contract for prompt replacements.
The scheme incorporates geo-tagging for each light, centralized monitoring via a command center, and an IVR helpline for issue reporting. Minister Arora highlighted the project’s positive impact on safety, inclusivity, and living standards in rural regions. Additionally, the government is actively pursuing other solar projects to enhance green energy production in the state. Describing the initiative as transformative, Minister Arora believes it will not only enhance security but also stimulate economic activities in villages statewide.
