The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has called upon Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, to appear before them on June 4. This summons is in relation to allegations of using casteist language during a visit to Dhuri town. Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi shared that the commission learned about the incident through social media.
A report was requested from the Senior Superintendent of Police in Sangrur, but the commission disagreed with the police’s findings. Ravneet Singh had previously apologized, stating that his words were misconstrued and that he did not intend to offend any community. He clarified that the remarks were made in a tense situation during the civic body elections in Sangrur.
The Union Minister expressed regret for any unintended offense caused by his statements. He explained that the context of the incident was highly charged, leading to certain parts of the conversation being highlighted. The commission intervened after a video of the confrontation between Ravneet Singh and police personnel went viral on social media. The incident occurred when BJP leader Onkar Singh was detained for allegedly campaigning during a silent period.
