The Puri Police have apprehended a notorious criminal, Krushna Kandi, believed to be involved in the vicious killing of a transgender individual near Bhubaneswar. Kandi, aged 25 and hailing from Konark in Puri district, was injured in the leg during a police confrontation and is receiving medical care at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The victim, Dinesh Prasad Rout alias Anjali, a transgender from Salepur in Cuttack district, was allegedly murdered by Kandi following a dispute near Uttara under Pipili police station limits on February 1. This heinous incident, occurring alongside a national highway, has sparked widespread condemnation, prompting protests by transgender groups across the state seeking justice.
In response to the crime, the Puri Police launched an inquiry by filing a case at Pipili Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act. Utilizing forensic expertise and a sniffer dog, the police collected evidence from the crime scene, including blood-stained soil, footwear, and other items crucial to the investigation.
To apprehend the suspect, a Special Investigative Team, headed by an Additional Superintendent of Police, was formed by the Puri Police. Through intelligence operations, Kandi was identified as the primary suspect in the murder case. Subsequently, a police encounter took place in the Pipili area where Kandi, known for his criminal activities, was located.
During the encounter, Kandi fired at the police team upon being cornered near Tarakaju, leading to a controlled response from the authorities resulting in his leg injury. The arrested suspect is currently under medical treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital. Kandi has a criminal record involving multiple robbery incidents, with investigations ongoing into the case.
The motive behind the transgender murder remains undisclosed by the police, who continue their inquiries into the tragic incident.
