World No. 10 PV Sindhu has advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open at Sydney’s Quaycentre after a commanding victory over Chen Su Yu from Chinese Taipei. Sindhu, seeded third, controlled the match from start to finish, clinching a 21-6, 21-9 win in just 27 minutes. This marks Sindhu’s second semifinal appearance this season, following her previous success at the Malaysia Open 2026.
In the upcoming semifinal, Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, will face top seed and three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi. This match will be their 29th meeting, with Sindhu holding a slight 15-13 lead in their head-to-head record. However, Yamaguchi has emerged victorious in four of their last five encounters.
Sindhu’s journey to the semifinals is her second in eight BWF World Tour events this season, providing a confidence boost after a somewhat inconsistent performance on the circuit. Meanwhile, young Indian Tanvi Sharma’s impressive run ended in the quarterfinals against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, known for her strong defense and precise shots.
Tanvi Sharma’s quarterfinal exit, though disappointing, showcased her potential with solid performances and notable upsets, highlighting her promising future in Indian badminton. On the men’s side, the Indian duo of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun had to retire during their men’s doubles match against opponents from Chinese Taipei.
Earlier in the tournament, Sindhu, Tanvi Sharma, and the men’s doubles pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun had all advanced to the quarterfinals. Tanvi continued her fine form with a 21-12, 21-15 victory over Malvika Bansod, while Sindhu defeated Isharani Baruah 22-20, 21-12. Hariharan and Arjun also progressed, beating Australia’s Michael Owen and Dylan Soedjasa 21-17, 21-17.
