Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi in Doha on Sunday to discuss the US-Iran peace memorandum of understanding. Both leaders emphasized the importance of all parties engaging in dialogue and adhering to the agreements outlined in the memorandum.
They highlighted the need to uphold freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and maintain regional security and stability. Additionally, the officials reviewed their countries’ bilateral relations and explored opportunities for enhancing cooperation in various sectors.
The United States and Iran signed the memorandum in mid-June, with a stipulation for negotiations within 60 days to reach a final agreement. However, recent tensions have escalated due to mutual attacks in the Middle East. Iranian officials have accused the US of breaching its commitments under the deal, leading Iran to suspend its obligations.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the US has failed to honor its commitments under the peace memorandum, prompting Iran to prioritize self-defense measures over negotiations. Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei criticized the US for disregarding the agreement, questioning the credibility of President Donald Trump’s signature.
