Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an independent investigation into the alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram Temple. They expressed concerns over the governance of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, highlighting affiliations with RSS and VHP members. Gandhi and Kharge emphasized the need for transparency in disclosing cash, gold, and silver offerings regardless of political ties.
The Congress leaders pointed out that despite the Trust’s formation on the Supreme Court’s directives, its members were appointed by the government, raising questions about their connections to RSS and VHP. They emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for the alleged theft of devotees’ contributions accountable. Gandhi and Kharge called for a thorough investigation into the Trust’s financial dealings, including the handling of donations, and demanded public disclosure of findings to ensure transparency.
In their letter to PM Modi, Gandhi and Kharge criticized the silence surrounding the alleged embezzlement within the Trust, urging swift action to restore faith among devotees. They stressed the significance of impartiality in holding wrongdoers responsible, emphasizing the impact on the government’s credibility. The Congress leaders highlighted the public’s expectation of a transparent and prompt response to the situation, underscoring the need for accountability and restitution.
The case of the Ram Temple donation theft surfaced following concerns raised by whistleblowers regarding the misappropriation of funds and valuables amounting to around Rs 7 crore. An SIT appointed by the Uttar Pradesh government is conducting an audit of the Trust’s accounts and overseeing the counting process. Eight individuals, including temple staff and bank employees, have been arrested in connection with the theft, as security measures are reinforced to prevent future incidents. The Supreme Court has also requested a status update on the ongoing investigation.
