Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, highlighted the enduring influence of truth, non-violence, and compassion in India’s constitutional values during the centenary celebration of the historic meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru in Kollam. Reflecting on the event, Rahul Gandhi expressed admiration for the simplicity and humility that characterized the encounter between the two iconic leaders. He emphasized the significance of the values espoused by Sree Narayana Guru, noting their alignment with the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

Rahul Gandhi underscored the importance of embracing compassion and forgiveness, citing an incident from Sree Narayana Guru’s life where he advocated for understanding and correction rather than violence towards thieves. Drawing parallels to India’s freedom struggle, Gandhi contrasted the moral authority of Mahatma Gandhi with the coercive power of the British Empire, emphasizing the enduring strength of truth over force. He also remarked on the contemporary political landscape, highlighting the dichotomy between truth and non-violence on one side and power devoid of Gandhian values on the other.

The Congress leader called for a commitment to the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and Sree Narayana Guru, emphasizing the need to uphold their principles in practice. The event, attended by leaders from diverse political and social backgrounds, symbolized the convergence of India’s freedom movement with Kerala’s rich tradition of social reform.
