Bhopal, Aug 11 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of trying to create a narrative by telling lies, saying such politics undermined the dignity of the office of Leader of Opposition.

CM Yadav made the remarks while interacting with reporters after meeting Governor Mangubhai Patel at Lok Bhavan in Bhopal.

His comments came amid a political row between the BJP and Congress over issues concerning students, with the opposition raising concerns about the handling of student grievances and the BJP accusing Congress leaders of politicising the matter.

CM Yadav said Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, should maintain the dignity and decorum associated with the constitutional position.

“Rahul Gandhi is constantly trying to create a narrative by telling lies; the kind of politics he is engaging in undermines the dignity of the office of the Leader of Opposition. Such actions diminish the stature of the Leader of Opposition and also disrupt the proceedings of the House,” CM Yadav said.

He said the Congress party should reflect on the office held by Gandhi and ensure that its dignity was upheld.

The Chief Minister said the LoP held an important position in the world’s largest democracy and should not violate the decorum associated with it.

The BJP and Congress have been trading charges over the handling of student-related issues, including protests and grievances concerning examinations and recruitment. The issue has emerged as another point of confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition.

Earlier, CM Yadav paid a courtesy call on Governor Mangubhai Patel at Lok Bhavan and discussed various issues concerning Madhya Pradesh. “Today, I paid a courtesy call on the Hon’ble Governor, Shri Mangubhai Patel, at Lok Bhawan, Bhopal. During the meeting, I apprised him of matters regarding the Uniform Civil Code, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign and the upcoming Independence Day programmes, as well as decisions concerning developmental initiatives,” CM Yadav said.

The CM said the two also discussed the Uniform Civil Code Bill, recently passed by the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, various development works and preparations for Independence Day.

CM Yadav said the state’s rainfall situation was also discussed during the meeting. According to him, Madhya Pradesh has received around 15 per cent less rainfall than normal due to the impact of El Niño.

The Chief Minister said the state’s ongoing programmes and development initiatives were also discussed with the Governor.
