Raijor Dal President and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi declared the termination of his party’s alliance with the Congress before the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. He accused senior Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Rakibul Hussain of causing the breakdown due to what he termed as “arrogance” during seat-sharing discussions. Gogoi mentioned that the alliance fell apart mainly because of disagreements over seat distribution, particularly regarding a single Assembly constituency.
He expressed disappointment that despite multiple rounds of talks, the Congress leadership did not uphold their previous commitments to his party. Gogoi revealed that while they had requested 15 Assembly constituencies to contest, the Congress was only willing to allocate nine seats to them, which was unacceptable. The Raijor Dal President also alleged that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had initially assured them that the Dhing Assembly constituency would be given to their party as part of the alliance agreement.
Akhil Gogoi further claimed that both the AICC and Pradyut Bordoloi had assured them of the Dhing seat during negotiations. However, he accused Gaurav Gogoi and Rakibul Hussain of later reneging on this commitment, leading to the collapse of the alliance talks. Gogoi asserted that the disagreement over the Dhing seat was the primary reason for the breakdown of the proposed alliance between the two parties.
The rift over the Dhing constituency is viewed as a setback to opposition unity in Assam ahead of the crucial Assembly polls, as efforts were being made to establish a broader coalition among anti-BJP factions in the state. Following the failed negotiations, Raijor Dal is now anticipated to participate in the elections independently.
