Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the Rail Tech Policy and the complete digitization of the Railway Claims Tribunal as part of the Indian Railways’ “52 Reforms in 52 Weeks” initiative. The Rail Tech Policy aims to foster innovation by engaging innovators, startups, industry, and institutions within the Indian Railways ecosystem. It simplifies innovator selection, introduces a dedicated Rail Tech Portal, and enhances grants for prototype development.
Vaishnaw emphasized the policy’s user-friendly approach, allowing anyone with innovative ideas to interact with the Railways through a digital Rail Tech portal. The focus is on transitioning from a rigid vendor selection process to an innovation-centric framework for technology trial and adoption. Key innovation areas include AI-based systems like Elephant Intrusion Detection, fire detection in coaches, and drone-based rail monitoring.
The Rail Tech Policy draws inspiration from successful models such as the iDEX initiative in defense and startup frameworks in the Ministry of Electronics & IT. It offers funding support for viable technological solutions, with the Railways backing up to 50% of the development costs initially. The policy aims not only to experiment but also to implement successful innovations on a larger scale for impactful results.
