The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Alipore has predicted rain in Kolkata and across West Bengal until Monday, coinciding with the International Yoga Day event on Sunday morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in the Yoga Day program at Red Road in Kolkata on Sunday, with preparations in progress and the area closed to traffic. Light rain is expected in Kolkata until Sunday afternoon, as per the Meteorological office’s forecast.
The southwest monsoon axis, spanning from Punjab to Bihar through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, remains active, while moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are entering the state, setting the stage for rain and thundershowers in various districts over the next few days. Heavy to very heavy rains are anticipated in some districts of South Bengal, with the likelihood of thunder showers and gusty winds. Similarly, north Bengal may experience very heavy to extremely heavy rains, prompting a landslide warning.
Widespread rainfall has already been recorded in the state over the last 24 hours, with heavy showers expected to persist in north Bengal for the next three days before gradually subsiding. The upper five districts of north Bengal have been warned of heavy to very heavy rains, with Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts on high alert. Meanwhile, Kolkata and its environs experienced a maximum temperature of 29 degrees Celsius on Friday, below normal by 4.08 degrees, with a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius, 2.04 degrees below normal. The region received 50.8 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours.
