Scattered rainfall in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, has provided relief to farmers by enhancing soil moisture levels, facilitating summer ploughing in various areas. The district witnessed an average rainfall of 7.6 mm over 24 hours, with varying distribution patterns.
Notably, Nagapattinam taluk received the highest average rainfall of 36 mm, while Vedaranyam and Kilvelur recorded 4.33 mm and 1.8 mm, respectively. Thirukkuvalai, however, did not receive any rainfall during this period. Rain gauge stations like Nagapattinam, Thalaignayar, and Velankanni reported varying rainfall levels.
The recent showers have positively impacted soil moisture, allowing farmers in certain regions to initiate land preparation for the upcoming samba season. While ploughing activities have surged in adequately rain-received areas, progress remains slow in other parts due to uneven rainfall distribution.
Farmers in Nagapattinam town have commenced preparatory work, but villages in the Vedaranyam area are awaiting more rainfall before starting cultivation activities. Agriculture in the region heavily relies on Cauvery irrigation, with limited alternative sources due to saline groundwater in coastal areas.
The uncertainty surrounding irrigation water availability has led many farmers to be cautious in their cultivation decisions. They are hopeful for additional rainfall in the following weeks to further improve field conditions and support their agricultural activities.
