Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma is set to join a significant meeting in New Delhi regarding the Yamuna Water Project. The meeting, to be graced by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and key officials, will concentrate on finalizing the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the project and addressing crucial implementation issues.
The Yamuna Water Project, a collaborative effort between Rajasthan, Haryana, and the Central Government, aims to provide a sustainable drinking water supply to the water-deficient Shekhawati districts. Additionally, the project is anticipated to enhance water availability for farmers in the region, thereby benefiting the agricultural sector.
Originating from the Yamuna Water Agreement signed in May 1994 involving several states, including Rajasthan and Haryana, the project is pivotal for Rajasthan, which was allocated 577 million cubic meters (MCM) of Yamuna water annually during the monsoon season. However, despite the allocation, the water has not yet been delivered to Rajasthan, making the ongoing discussions crucial for project implementation.
A joint Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared by Rajasthan and Haryana, awaiting review by the Central Water Commission. Once approved, the project, involving the installation of four underground pipelines from the Hathnikund Barrage, is poised to commence. Three pipelines are designated to supply drinking water to Shekhawati districts, while the fourth will cater to border areas of Haryana and Rajasthan.
