Rajasthan has been recognized globally for its exceptional work in tobacco control. The Department of Medical and Health in Rajasthan has received a prestigious international award from the World Health Organization for its outstanding efforts in implementing tobacco control measures across the state. This recognition by WHO under the World No Tobacco Day Awards 2026 acknowledges Rajasthan’s significant achievements in tobacco control during 2025-26 in the South-East Asia Region.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed delight at this achievement, emphasizing the state government’s strong dedication to public health and its goal of creating a “Tobacco-Free Rajasthan.” The government’s continuous efforts to safeguard citizens, particularly the youth, from the harmful impact of tobacco use have been instrumental in receiving this honor. The Chief Minister attributed this success to the collaborative work of the Department of Medical and Health, district administrations, healthcare professionals, and various social organizations throughout the state.
Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar highlighted Rajasthan’s position as a leading model for tobacco control in India. The state has significantly expanded its tobacco cessation treatment and counseling services, benefiting a large number of individuals. He affirmed the government’s commitment to further strengthening tobacco control initiatives through increased public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement measures in the upcoming years.
Currently, Rajasthan operates over 500 tobacco cessation treatment and counseling centers, reaching down to the block level. These centers are digitally integrated and geo-tagged, making it easier for citizens to locate and access nearby facilities. The state has also conducted rigorous enforcement actions under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, and the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019.
