Ranchi Royals clinched their inaugural victory of the Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26 season by defeating defending champions Shrachi Bengal Tigers 4-1. The Royals, playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, staged a remarkable late-game comeback, scoring four goals in the final six minutes to claim a thrilling win.
The match commenced with the Bengal Tigers displaying their championship pedigree, applying a high-press strategy to keep Ranchi on the back foot. Despite the Tigers earning an early penalty corner in the 2nd minute, they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Sam Lane of Ranchi exhibited early sharpness, creating a chance in the 5th minute that led to another penalty corner, although the shot was blocked. Both teams’ goalkeepers were tested early on, with Ranchi’s Suraj Karkera making a crucial save in the 9th minute. Despite intense attacks from both sides, the first quarter concluded in a goalless stalemate.
The intensity continued into the second quarter, where the Tigers, despite being a player short due to a green card, managed to break the deadlock in the 25th minute. Ranchi responded fervently, with captain Tom Boon coming close to equalizing just before halftime, only to be denied by a splendid save from Tigers’ goalkeeper James Carr, leaving the visitors ahead 1-0 at the break.
As the match progressed to the third quarter, the Tigers adopted a defensive approach with a five-man backline to safeguard their lead. Ranchi attempted to exploit width to create openings, but the Bengal defense remained resolute. Despite the Tigers’ efforts to extend their lead through penalty corners, Ranchi’s defensive duo of Manpreet and Yashdeep thwarted their advances. By the end of the third period, the Tigers maintained their narrow 1-0 advantage.
However, the final quarter belonged entirely to Ranchi Royals. The tide turned in the 54th minute when captain Tom Boon intercepted a Tigers player, executed a quick exchange of passes, and scored a crucial goal to level the score at 1-1.
The equalizer injected fresh energy into the Royals, and veteran Mandeep Singh capitalized on this momentum by finding the net in the 56th minute, propelling Ranchi into the lead. The Tigers’ defense faltered further as Ranchi continued their offensive onslaught. Lachlan Sharp extended Ranchi’s lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute, effectively sealing the victory. In the dying moments of the game, Tom Boon netted his second goal, completing a commanding 4-1 comeback.
Sam Lane was rightfully named the Player of the Match for his exceptional midfield performance and his pivotal role in igniting the Royals’ attacking prowess. This triumph signifies a significant breakthrough for Ranchi Royals as they aim to gather momentum in the ongoing 2025-26 season.
