Re-polling is scheduled for 15 polling booths in Magrahat (Paschim) and Diamond Harbour Assembly constituencies in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. This decision follows reports of large-scale electoral malpractices during the second phase of the Assembly elections on April 29. The Election Commission of India made this announcement based on complaints from returning officers and general observers.
Of the 15 booths set for re-polling, 11 are in Magrahat (Paschim) and 4 are in Diamond Harbour. Additionally, there is a likelihood of re-polling in up to 30 booths in the Falta Assembly constituency, Diamond Harbour subdivision. The Election Commission of India initiated a thorough investigation into complaints regarding the Electronic Voting Machine button related to the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Falta.
Following the investigation conducted by the Election Commission of India-appointed special observer, Subrat Gupta, re-polling has been ordered for 30 booths in Falta. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal unit had earlier demanded re-polling for the entire Falta Assembly constituency. Tensions escalated in Falta before the elections due to disputes involving the Election Commission of India-appointed special police observer and the Trinamool Congress candidate.
Reports of electoral violence emerged on polling day, with clashes between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party supporters. The situation remains tense in the region.
