The upcoming Real Madrid presidential election has taken a new twist with Enrique Riquelme revealing that Raul Gonzalez Blanco could become the director of sport if he wins. Raul, a revered figure in the club’s history, scored 323 goals in 741 appearances and previously coached Real Madrid Castilla. Riquelme confirmed this development in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena COPE.
Riquelme emphasized the need for a professional culture at Real Madrid, stating that he has discussed his plans with Raul. He expressed confidence in Raul’s commitment to the club’s interests if appointed. Meanwhile, current president Florentino Perez, also a candidate, has not named a sporting director during his tenure since 2009.
The election campaign has seen speculation linking Jose Mourinho with a return as coach if Perez is reelected. Mourinho, who ended Raul’s playing career at Real Madrid in 2010, is reportedly a key figure in Perez’s plans. Riquelme has pledged to unveil transfer targets and his preferred coach soon, as the club gears up for the first contested election since 2006.
