Nearly 55.49 crore users have joined the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform by June 2026. During the financial year 2025-26, UPI handled a remarkable 24,161.69 crore transactions amounting to Rs 314.23 lakh crore, as disclosed by the government to Parliament. The transaction volume has shown a consistent increase over the last five years, with significant growth in both the number of transactions and their total value.

In the financial year 2021-22, UPI managed 4,595.61 crore transactions worth Rs 84.16 lakh crore. Subsequently, in FY2022-23, the platform processed 8,371.44 crore transactions valued at Rs 139.15 lakh crore. The upward trend continued in FY2023-24, with 13,112.95 crore transactions amounting to Rs 199.95 lakh crore. In the following fiscal year, FY2024-25, UPI recorded 18,586.60 crore transactions with a total value of Rs 260.56 lakh crore.

The government highlighted the role of NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL), a subsidiary of NPCI, in expanding India’s digital payment ecosystem globally. NIPL, established in April 2020, collaborates with foreign entities to introduce platforms like UPI and the RuPay card scheme in international markets. These partnerships not only facilitate seamless cross-border payments for Indian tourists and the diaspora but also aid partner countries in developing real-time payment systems akin to UPI and domestic card payment infrastructure similar to RuPay.

To enhance the security and transparency of UPI transactions, the government, RBI, and NPCI have implemented various measures. These include setting risk-based transaction limits to prevent fraudulent activities, introducing safeguards against unauthorized mobile number changes and misuse of SMS-based authentication, and enforcing stricter security requirements for UPI applications. Additionally, NPCI has issued the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework (CUISF) 2025 and the Mobile Application Security Framework to mandate advanced security controls, thereby fortifying the safety and resilience of the UPI ecosystem.

The minister further informed the House about the integration of UPI with the payment systems of multiple countries to facilitate person-to-person remittances and person-to-merchant transactions. This integration not only strengthens the global presence of India’s flagship digital payments platform but also fosters international transactions and collaborations.
