Four referees who oversaw a football match at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on December 13, just before Lionel Messi’s appearance, are being investigated for allegedly not obtaining proper authorization. The Indian Football Association (IFA) has summoned them to explain their involvement without the necessary permissions from either the IFA or the Calcutta Referees’ Association (CRA). Potential disciplinary measures are being considered.
The Salt Lake Stadium was filled with fans on December 13, eagerly anticipating Messi’s arrival. However, chaos ensued when Messi entered, with crowds rushing forward for photos, causing security issues. Spectators later expressed disappointment as they struggled to see Messi, who left after only 22 minutes. Subsequently, vandalism occurred within the stadium, with damage to property and reports of unruly behavior.
Following the incident, an investigation committee was formed by the state government. Event organizer Satadru Dutta was arrested, while Aroop resigned as the state Sports Minister. Additionally, senior police officers, including Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, were issued show-cause notices. The referees in question had officiated a match between Mohun Bagan and Diamond Harbour Legends before Messi’s appearance, allegedly without the required clearances.
The IFA’s disciplinary committee is set to convene on January 20 to hear from the referees. They may face consequences for not adhering to the established protocols for officiating at significant events without proper authorization. The referees will have the opportunity to present their defense during the committee meeting.
