Stressing that censoring films insults audiences, acclaimed filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma advocated for the abolition of censorship. Varma highlighted the irrelevance of censorship in today’s era of widespread access to information and technology, questioning the need for a committee to dictate what adults can watch.
He criticized the hypocrisy of allowing adults to make significant decisions like voting but restricting their choice in film viewing. Varma emphasized that cutting scenes from movies for theatrical release is futile as the uncut versions quickly circulate on various platforms, reaching a wider audience than intended.
Varma argued that censorship not only fails to conceal content but also fuels curiosity and demand. He pointed out the futility of gatekeeping in the age of advanced technology and emphasized the importance of respecting viewers’ autonomy to make their own choices regarding film content.
Asserting that filmmakers should resist undue censorship and advocate for artistic freedom, Varma urged the film industry to unite against oppressive censorship practices. He called for a collective effort to challenge the existing censor board system, emphasizing the necessity of free expression in a democratic society.
