Renowned Doctor and Padma Shri Awardee Mani Chhetri Passes Away at 105

Renowned doctor and Padma Shri awardee Mani Chhetri passed away at the age of 105 due to old age-related ailments. He breathed his last at 10:15 PM on Sunday at his residence in Ballygunge Place. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences for the loss, highlighting his significant contributions to the medical field.

Mani Chhetri, who served as the director of SSKM Hospital, was instrumental in establishing the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) and various departments like Endocrinology, Cardiology, and Nephrology. His initiatives were pioneering in the state’s healthcare system.

The West Bengal Doctors’ Forum announced that doctors across the state would wear black badges as a mark of respect for the legendary doctor. Mani Kumar Chhetri, born in Darjeeling in 1920, received numerous accolades for his medical achievements, including the prestigious Padma Shri award in 1974.
