Repair work has started on the vital external power line supporting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The 750-kilovolt Dniprovska transmission line, disconnected since March 24, is being restored by specialists. This initiative was made feasible due to a ceasefire ensuring the safety of energy infrastructure personnel.
The Dniprovska line plays a crucial role in the plant’s external power system. Its reinstatement is anticipated to enhance power reliability and boost nuclear and radiation safety, as per the Xinhua news agency. On May 30, a Ukrainian combat drone targeted the turbine hall of Unit 6 at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Following the drone strike, experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspected the affected area. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed grave concerns over the incident, emphasizing the dangers of attacks on nuclear facilities. The IAEA brokered a localized ceasefire near the Zaporizhzhia NPP to facilitate essential power line repairs and avert potential nuclear risks.
The ceasefire, negotiated by Grossi with Russia and Ukraine, will continue until June 23, according to Alexey Likhachev, the director general of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom. Likhachev also disclosed that three individuals sustained injuries in the Ukrainian drone attack on the ZNPP.
