An influential Republican Indian American has expressed concerns that the proposed US legislation targeting countries importing Russian oil might negatively affect India-US relations. Ashok Mago, founder chairman of the US-India Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that the timing and scale of such measures could disrupt the ongoing trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington. Mago criticized the potential 500 per cent tariff outlined in the Russia Sanctions Bill, cautioning that it could hinder the progress of tariff discussions between the two nations.
The bill, supported by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and reportedly backed by President Donald Trump, aims to enable the US president to significantly raise duties on countries purchasing Russian oil. Graham highlighted the bill’s potential to pressure countries like China, India, and Brazil to cease buying inexpensive Russian oil, which he claimed funds Putin’s actions against Ukraine. Mago warned that such a substantial tariff would directly impact the Indian American community, leading to increased prices for everyday goods imported from India.
Mago, recognized for his role in the India-US civil nuclear deal and honored with the Padma Shree in 2014, advocated for a negotiated approach between Washington and Delhi. He stressed the importance of mutually beneficial tariff programs that support both nations, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the world’s largest democracy and the oldest. Mago urged for restraint, suggesting that Congress should explore all avenues before resorting to drastic measures, to ensure a fair deal for all parties involved.
Highlighting the significant contributions of Indian Americans to the US economy across various sectors, Mago emphasized the community’s commitment to the country. He appealed for a diplomatic resolution to the current situation, expressing optimism that both nations could overcome strained relations and work towards mutual prosperity. Mago underscored the importance of dialogue and negotiation in resolving issues, with a focus on sustaining economic growth for both India and the United States.
