Residents of Bilauti village in Bihar’s Bhojpur district are commemorating Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, who died in a police encounter, by naming a new settlement after him. A signboard at the encounter site displays a message honoring Tiwari’s sacrifice, along with his photo and the date of his death.
The proposed settlement, Shaheed Bharat Nagar Javainya, is set to accommodate families displaced from Javainya village. Locals and activists are advocating for the settlement to be officially named Bharat Nagar in Tiwari’s memory. Tiwari was known for advocating local issues and supporting villagers on land and rehabilitation matters.
The Yuva Parivartan Foundation in Shahpur is mentioned on the signboard, indicating local involvement in the naming initiative. Despite the local efforts, there has been no official government approval for the proposed settlement name. Tiwari was killed in an encounter on June 17, with police claiming self-defence while his family disputes the circumstances, leading to a judicial inquiry.
