Residents in Delhi-NCR woke up to cloudy skies and cooler temperatures on Friday morning as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for severe weather conditions. The IMD forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds throughout the day, with wind speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph in some areas.
The weather department predicts thunderstorm activity in northwestern India, including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and nearby regions, with possible hailstorms in isolated areas. Thundersqualls with wind speeds of 60-70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, are expected over Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
Following a sudden change in weather late Thursday night, with strong winds and rain in parts of Delhi-NCR, residents are advised to take precautions. Meteorologists attribute the weather shift to a western disturbance, a cyclonic circulation over Haryana, and an associated trough, maintaining conditions suitable for rainfall and thunderstorms in the coming days.
The IMD recommends that people remain cautious during adverse weather conditions, advising them to stay indoors, avoid trees, weak structures, and water bodies during thunderstorms and strong winds. A red alert signifies the potential for severe weather that may endanger lives and property, prompting authorities and residents to take immediate safety measures.
