Residents of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir Face Challenges Amid Rising Prices

Residents in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are struggling with soaring prices of essential goods, with grievances over political representation likely to fuel public dissent. Despite being labeled a terrorist organization, groups like the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) are expected to challenge the status quo that Islamabad is keen on maintaining. A recent report highlighted the deep-rooted discontent in the region, exacerbated by a deadly clash between protesters and security forces.

The violent crackdown on demonstrators demanding governance reform has led to numerous casualties, sparking a political crisis for Islamabad and drawing international criticism. The upcoming legislative assembly elections in late July add to the turmoil, posing a significant domestic test for the Pakistani government. Diplomatic efforts to portray itself as a peacemaker may not overshadow the unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Authorities in Pakistan announced elections in the region on July 27 while simultaneously banning the JAAC, a coalition of various groups, on terrorism charges. The timing of these actions, as per the report, appears strategic and not coincidental. In anticipation of unrest surrounding the elections, local authorities, likely influenced by Islamabad, swiftly moved to suppress public organization by targeting the influential protest movement.

The JAAC responded to its ban and the election announcement by calling for a strike, citing grievances beyond the reserved seats issue. Economic hardships, including rising living costs and electricity prices, have fueled public frustration. The crisis in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has exposed Islamabad’s limited authority in the region and strained the social contract. The report emphasized that the discontent poses a significant challenge to the existing political order.

The actions of Pakistani authorities have sparked international outrage, especially among the Kashmiri diaspora. Protests in London against the Pakistani security forces’ actions have drawn attention to the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
