In an effort to uphold law and order in Pune district, the police administration has enforced restrictive orders under Sections 37(1), 37(2), and 37(3) of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, spanning 14 days from July 21 to August 3. These measures apply throughout the Pune Police Commissionerate area from 12:01 A.M. on July 21 to midnight on August 3. The restrictions aim to safeguard public peace and security, as outlined by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Prashant Amrutkar.
The decision to implement these restrictions stems from anticipated agitations like marches, sit-ins, shutdowns, and hunger strikes organized by political parties, social groups, and the upcoming birth anniversary of Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe and other festivals. Prohibitions include assembling in groups of five or more, conducting meetings, or organizing processions without prior authorization from the Police Commissioner. Additionally, the order bars the possession, gathering, or preparation of explosives, flammable substances, weapons, and other items capable of causing harm.
The directive also prohibits the display or burning of effigies, the utterance of inflammatory or offensive slogans, the delivery of provocative speeches, and the dissemination of materials that could disrupt public peace, morality, or state security. Notably, the order addresses the creation and sharing of social media content that incites panic, threatens, or glorifies criminal activities. It exempts employees on official duty, authorized officers carrying weapons, and private security personnel with batons up to 3.5 feet in length.
Authorities emphasize that violations will result in legal repercussions under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, even beyond the order’s validity period. The Pune Police urge citizens to adhere to the restrictions and collaborate with the administration to maintain law and order.
