Ramagundam Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited (RFCL) in Telangana’s Peddapalli district has restarted production after being closed for over a week due to an ammonia pipeline leak and technical issues. Urea production is back on track at the state-owned company following repairs at the plant. Officials have assured that necessary steps have been taken to prevent any future technical glitches.
The halt in urea production began on July 9 when all plant units were shut down due to a leakage caused by technical problems. Despite efforts to fix the issue, production was suspended until now. The interruption in supply has impacted Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and five other states, leading to concerns about meeting farmers’ fertilizer needs during the Kharif crop season.
This is the second time this year that an ammonia leak has resulted in the closure of the RFCL plant. Operating at half its capacity of 3,850 tonnes per day due to gas shortages from the Middle East conflict, the plant has faced challenges. With RFCL being the sole urea source for Telangana, there are calls for the entire output to be allocated to the state.
Peddapalli MP Gadam Vamsi has criticized the government for neglecting RFCL and urged the relocation of its corporate office from Noida to Ramagundam. He highlighted the disparity in administrative focus despite Ramagundam’s operational significance and workforce concentration.
