Robin Montgomery, aged 21, achieved her maiden WTA singles title at the Libema Open in s’Hertogenbosch when top seed Barbora Krejcikova withdrew from the final due to illness. This victory marks a significant milestone in Montgomery’s career, which was briefly halted by injury, keeping her out of competition for almost 10 months until April this year.
Montgomery, ranked No. 484 in the world and a qualifier at the tournament, showcased an impressive performance throughout the event, making it to the championship match. Her triumph places her among the lowest-ranked players to win a WTA Tour singles title in recent times, following a similar feat by Elina Svitolina in 2023 when she was ranked No. 508.
The American’s success adds to the trend of qualifiers excelling on the tour this season, with Montgomery joining the ranks of other qualifiers who have clinched WTA titles in 2026. Krejcikova, on the other hand, had to withdraw from the final due to illness, expressing her disappointment but congratulating Montgomery on her exceptional performance during the week.
