Former India cricket captain Rohit Sharma, Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur, and Para-athlete Praveen Kumar have been selected for the prestigious Padma Shri awards in the Padma Awards 2026 announcement. These awards recognize their significant contributions to Indian sports over the years.

The Padma Shri honors not only current but also former sports stars. Tennis legend Vijay Amritraj was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, making him the sole sportsperson to receive India’s third-highest civilian award this year. Amritraj’s illustrious career, both on and off the court, spans several decades.

Rohit Sharma, the ex-skipper of the Indian men’s cricket team, is renowned for his leadership and exceptional batting performances. He guided India to victory in the second T20 World Cup in 2024. Harmanpreet Kaur, leading the women’s team, played a pivotal role in India’s triumph at the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, inspiring young cricketers with her bold leadership.

The list of honored sports personalities also includes Savita Punia, the goalkeeper of the Indian women’s hockey team, recognized for her consistency and leadership that elevated India’s standing on the global stage. Additionally, Baldev Singh, Bhagwandas Raikwar, and K Pajanivel were awarded the Padma Shri for their remarkable achievements in sports.

The Padma Awards, prestigious civilian honors in India, acknowledge excellence and service in diverse fields. This year’s awardees from cricket, tennis, and hockey reflect the increasing impact and prominence of Indian sports on the world stage.
