Former India cricket captain Rohit Sharma was honored with the Padma Shri, a prestigious civilian award, at the Padma Awards ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Rohit in recognition of his remarkable contributions to Indian cricket. Rohit, accompanied by his wife Ritika Sajdeh, attended the ceremony after missing the initial event in May.
The ceremony also saw former Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj being conferred the Padma Bhushan, and Indian women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia among the Padma Shri awardees. This recognition adds to Rohit’s illustrious career that has spanned close to two decades at the highest level of the sport. Since his debut in 2007, Rohit has emerged as a key player and leader in Indian cricket, delivering outstanding performances across various formats.
Rohit’s Padma Shri award was acknowledged by the Indian cricket team, who shared a video of the ceremony on social media, praising his achievements. In response to the honor earlier this year, Rohit expressed gratitude towards the Government of India and all those who have supported his career. He emphasized his commitment to continue striving for victories and trophies for his country, expressing his gratitude and patriotism.
Under Rohit’s captaincy, India achieved significant success in international cricket, including breaking their ICC trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy the following year. Rohit’s impressive batting record reflects his consistency and longevity, with notable performances in Test, ODI, and T20 formats. While he has stepped back from Test and T20 cricket, Rohit remains a vital part of India’s ODI squad, aiming to lead the team towards the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
