Romanian President Nicusor Dan announced that Romania had taken down a drone that breached its airspace in Buzau County. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine how the drone entered Romania’s airspace and to identify it. President Dan highlighted that the area where the drone was shot down was uninhabited, allowing for the interception from above.
Romania’s Ministry of National Defence reported that their radar system detected an aerial target about 20 km east of Sulina, which then entered the national airspace. An F-16 fighter jet from the Romanian Air Force used an air-to-air missile to neutralize the target over an unpopulated area near Padina, Buzau County. In response to the situation, two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft and two Romanian Air Force F-16 aircraft were deployed.
Earlier in June, a maritime drone exploded in Romania’s Constanta port, with no casualties reported. The Ministry of National Defence clarified that the drone was not affiliated with the Romanian Army’s equipment or recent exercises in the Black Sea region. Additionally, in May, a Russian drone struck a residential building in Galati city, causing injuries and a fire.
Following the incident in Galati, Romania summoned the Russian Ambassador to Romania, Vladimir Lipayev, for discussions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Romanian Foreign Minister Toiu Oana confirmed the Russian origin of the drone involved in the residential building crash. The global community condemned the incident, with leaders worldwide expressing their disapproval.
