As Maharashtra local body polls are underway, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat highlighted the significance of elections in a democratic setup. Bhagwat, after casting his vote at Bhauji Daptari English Medium School in Nagpur, emphasized the duty of every citizen to participate in voting. He urged citizens to make informed decisions and choose the most suitable candidate, stating that voting is a fundamental responsibility in a democratic society.
Efforts to boost voter turnout were acknowledged by Bhagwat, who mentioned ongoing initiatives by the Election Commission and the public. He expressed optimism that eventually, everyone’s conscience would guide them to make the right choice. Bhagwat also discussed the option of NOTA (None of the Above), noting its value in expressing dissatisfaction but cautioning against wasting votes on unworthy candidates. He concluded by stressing the importance of voting regardless of personal preferences.
Polling for 29 municipal corporations commenced at 7.30 a.m. and will end at 5.30 p.m., with 2,801 seats up for election due to 68 candidates being elected unopposed. A total of 3.48 crore voters will determine the fate of 15,931 candidates, with the counting of votes scheduled for January 16. The State Election Commission has set up 39,147 polling stations across Maharashtra, including 10,111 stations in Mumbai alone, to facilitate the electoral process.
Elections are taking place in various municipal corporations across major cities in Maharashtra, marking the first such polls in over six years. While most corporations follow a multi-member ward system, Mumbai operates under a single-member ward system. The electoral process, except in Mumbai, covers cities like Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Thane, among others, with a focus on renewing local governance structures.
