Russian air defence forces have successfully intercepted around 180 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) amidst a significant drone assault from Ukraine, as reported by local media. Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described this as the most extensive drone attack on the Russian capital in the past two years, according to state-owned Tass media. The air defence operations are ongoing, with an oil refinery in the Kapotnya district being among the targets of the drone strikes.
Moscow took precautionary measures by temporarily halting operations at several airports, with Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports not currently facilitating flights. The Ministry of Transport and the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) are closely monitoring aviation activities to ensure safety. Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that 16 individuals, including two children aged 10 and three, sustained injuries during the drone attacks.
US President Donald Trump recently announced a shift in focus towards the Russia-Ukraine conflict after a perceived breakthrough agreement with Iran. This comes in the wake of Russian air defence forces downing 144 Ukrainian drones in the Leningrad region earlier this month, as confirmed by regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko on social media. While no significant damage occurred, debris from the downed drones caused minor harm to residential structures.
