In a significant move, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has announced comprehensive reforms for the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season. These reforms include the digitization of pilgrim services, AI-based crowd management, and an extensive expansion of online accommodation booking. The traditional Ayyappa Sangamam will no longer be held, with the focus shifting towards enhancing facilities for devotees.
The decision holds political importance due to the controversy surrounding the last Ayyappa Sangamam, which saw criticism over the participation of key political figures. The TDB has revamped its accommodation booking system, making 550 rooms available for online booking this season without the need for a security deposit. Additionally, AI-enabled control rooms will be set up to monitor pilgrim movement and crowd management effectively.
Furthermore, the Board plans to conduct five Padi Poojas daily, instead of one, due to overwhelming demand. Families of the 54 pilgrims who lost their lives during the previous season will receive insurance assistance. The TDB is also working on introducing comprehensive insurance coverage for pilgrims in collaboration with the Life Insurance Corporation of India. Various welfare measures, including post-monsoon cleaning and standard meal services, are also in the pipeline to enhance the overall pilgrimage experience.
