A day after being arrested and sent to judicial custody in connection with the gold theft case, Sabarimala priest Kantaru Rajeevar was moved to the state-run Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning after feeling unwell. Following his arrest recorded by the Kerala High Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), Rajeevar was remanded to judicial custody by a court in Kollam late on Friday night. The ‘tantri (priest)’ requested medical attention after being served breakfast in the Special Sub-jail on Saturday morning.
After examination by the jail doctor, Rajeevar was transferred to the General Hospital and later to the Medical College Hospital for treatment. The arrest of Rajeevar by the SIT came after extensive questioning regarding his alleged involvement in the gold theft case. The decision to arrest him was made following a thorough review of evidence and legal consultation to ensure due process was followed.
The remand report submitted to the court emphasized the significant role and responsibilities of the ‘tantri’ as outlined in the Devaswom Manual. Described as holding a position equivalent to an Assistant Commissioner in the Devaswom hierarchy, the ‘tantri’ plays a crucial role in temple rituals and the management of Devaswom assets. Investigators highlighted the importance of the ‘tantri’ in safeguarding Devaswom properties, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations in the gold theft case.
