Sahith Theegala showcased his best golf in the third round of the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, carding a 2-under 68 to move into a tie for 29th place for the final round. Despite missing a top 25 spot due to a closing bogey, Theegala’s performance marked a significant improvement from his earlier rounds and sets a positive tone for the final day.
Starting confidently with birdies at the second and seventh holes, Theegala turned in a 2-under 33. Although a bogey at the 10th momentarily slowed his progress, he bounced back with birdies at the 14th and 16th to reach 3-under for the tournament. Even with a closing bogey, his 68 propelled him from tied 52nd overnight to tied 29th.
American Sam Burns took the lead with a stellar 5-under 65, opening a two-shot advantage at 10-under-par. Burns, now positioned to secure his first Major title, aims to become the fourth consecutive American to win the Claret Jug. His exceptional combined score of 127 over the second and third rounds is a record in men’s Major Championship history.
