Sahith Theegala impressed on the first day of the Players Championship by carding a 5-under 67, sharing the lead before play was halted due to darkness. Theegala, along with four others, including Maverick McNealy and Lee Hodges, led the leaderboard. The 28-year-old golfer started strong with three consecutive birdies but faced a setback on the ninth hole.
The highlight of Theegala’s round was a spectacular 99-yard wedge shot for eagle on the 12th hole. He finished the day tied for the lead after adding another birdie on the 16th hole. Reflecting on his performance, Theegala described the eagle shot as a nice bonus and expressed gratitude for returning to the game healthy after previous injuries.
Among other players of Indian descent, Akshay Bhatia, following his recent victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, finished with a 1-under 71, placing him at T-30. Sudarshan Yellamaraju and Aaron Rai also had their standings when play was paused. Bhatia, who confirmed his participation in the Hero Indian Open, showcased a mix of birdies and bogeys in his round.
Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked player, ended with an even-par round at T-40, while Rory McIlroy struggled with a 2-over 74, placing him at T-69. Tommy Fleetwood started well with a 3-under 69, securing a spot at T-10. Unfortunately, Collin Morikawa had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury after completing just one hole.
