The Sakrebyle Elephant Camp near Shivamogga has been temporarily shut down to visitors due to a recent tragic event at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Madikeri district, Karnataka. This decision comes after a woman lost her life in a clash between two captive elephants, one of which, Marthanda, also passed away later. As a precaution, tourist access to the Sakrebyle camp has been completely halted until new safety protocols are established.
Initially, certain activities like elephant bathing and close interaction with the elephants were restricted at the camp, while tourists could still observe the elephants from a distance. However, authorities have now decided to suspend all visitor entry to avoid any further incidents. The restrictions will remain in place until revised safety guidelines and procedures are enforced.
Situated near Gajanur in Shivamogga taluk, along the Tunga reservoir’s backwaters, the Sakrebyle Elephant Camp is a popular spot for tourists seeking elephant interactions. The recent tragic incident at the Dubare Elephant Camp, resulting in the death of a tourist from Tamil Nadu, has led to the closure of that camp as well. Tourist entry has been completely prohibited following the unfortunate event.
Authorities have taken these measures after the clash between captive elephants claimed the life of a 33-year-old woman tourist from Chennai. Her husband, who was also injured in the incident, has been hospitalized for treatment. The couple had visited the Dubare Elephant Camp, where the elephants began fighting while tourists were participating in activities like bathing and cleaning the animals.
