Samajwadi Party MP Afzal Ansari criticized Uttar Pradesh Minister Daya Shankar Singh for his remarks on the bail granted to former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. Ansari questioned the minister’s authority, emphasizing that the judiciary determines guilt or innocence, not the minister.
Ansari highlighted a concerning mindset within the ruling party, stating that there is a misconception of superiority over the judiciary. He expressed that those granted bail are often labeled as convicted, while the innocent are treated as accused, reflecting a biased approach.
The MP further alleged that government officials believe they are immune to legal consequences, contrasting this with the legal scrutiny faced by ordinary citizens. Ansari criticized the tendency within the government to evade trials for themselves while subjecting others to false cases and court proceedings.
The criticism arose following the Delhi High Court’s decision to grant bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, previously convicted in a high-profile case involving the sexual assault of a minor in Unnao. Minister Daya Shankar Singh’s supportive comments on the bail sparked backlash from opposition leaders, who accused him of undermining judicial authority.
The Unnao case, which gained national attention, had resulted in Sengar’s conviction and life imprisonment. Legal experts clarified that bail is a constitutional right and does not indicate guilt, a distinction emphasized in Ansari’s critique of the situation.
