Samsung has refuted allegations made by British singer Dua Lipa that the company used her image on TV packaging without permission. Lipa’s legal team filed a lawsuit seeking over $15 million in damages, citing copyright and trademark violations. Samsung clarified that the image was used with authorization from a content partner for their streaming service.
The tech giant emphasized that Lipa’s image was sourced from a content partner for Samsung TV Plus and was used after explicit permission was obtained. Samsung expressed its respect for Lipa and other artists’ intellectual property rights, stating its willingness to engage in constructive discussions with the singer. The company suspended the production of the packaging in question and initiated mediation after Lipa raised concerns.
According to the lawsuit, Lipa’s team alleged that Samsung used a backstage photograph from a music festival without consent on TV packaging sold in the U.S. Samsung replaced the packaging and engaged in mediation following Lipa’s complaint. However, Lipa proceeded with the lawsuit, citing copyright, right of publicity, Lanham Act, and trademark violations.
