Former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s close aide V. K. Sasikala has introduced a new political party named Amma Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK), seen as a direct competition to TTV Dhinakaran’s Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) before the 2026 Assembly elections.
The party’s inauguration took place in Ramanathapuram during an event commemorating Jayalalithaa’s birth anniversary. Sasikala, marking her official return to politics, revealed the party’s flag displaying portraits of AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran, Jayalalithaa, and former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, emphasizing her aim to align the new party with the Dravidian legacy.
Political experts suggest that the party’s name, closely resembling AIADMK’s original identity, is a strategic move to reconnect with Jayalalithaa’s followers and rejuvenate the “Amma” brand in a politically divided environment.
The acronym ADMK holds symbolic importance, evoking recognition among traditional AIADMK supporters. Reports indicate Sasikala’s intention to nominate candidates in more than 20 constituencies, mainly in the southern districts where the Mukkulathor community, comprising Thevar, Kallar, and Agamudayar groups, wields significant electoral influence.
Sasikala’s strategy is believed to concentrate on consolidating this voter base. By planning to contest over 20 seats, her party is likely to meet the criteria for a common election symbol under Rule 10B of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, which mandates contesting in at least five percent of the total Assembly seats.
Political analysts observe that the emergence of this new party could heighten competition within the “Amma” political domain, especially as Dhinakaran’s AMMK recently aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Sasikala is reportedly contemplating fielding candidates in constituencies where AMMK is expected to run, setting the stage for direct electoral clashes.
With Tamil Nadu gearing up for a crucial election period, Sasikala’s reentry into politics through ADMK is poised to introduce new dynamics and further fragment the opposition’s voter base in key State regions.
