India’s renowned squash player Saurav Ghosal has been appointed as the Sports Commissioner of World Premier Squash (WPS), a new global league set to debut this August. In his role, Ghosal will be responsible for establishing and supervising the league’s entire sporting framework, which includes competition formats, player qualification pathways, and officiating standards. This appointment coincides with a pivotal moment for squash as the sport gears up for its Olympic debut at the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, driving increased global interest and investment.
Ghosal, who previously held positions as the Men’s President of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and co-chair of the joint Athletes Commission of the PSA and World Squash, is the first male player from India to break into the top 10 on the PSA World Rankings. With an impressive record of 11 titles, 9 Asian Games medals, and two decades of elite competition, Ghosal brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
World Premier Squash aims to blend elite professional competition with an inclusive global pathway facilitated by multimodal AI technology. Out of the 24 players in the league, 8 will be elite professionals, while the remaining spots can be secured through AI-enabled challenges on the Future of Sports Platform (FSP). This innovative approach allows squash players worldwide to qualify for up to 16 spots based on merit, without the need for agents, ranking history, or geographical constraints.
Ghosal emphasized the league’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “World Premier Squash recognizes the talent that emerges from all corners of the globe and provides a genuine pathway to success for aspiring players through AI-enabled challenges on the FSP platform.”
