Search and rescue teams are actively looking for three climbers who went missing following the eruption of Mount Dukono, as confirmed by Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). Two of the missing climbers are foreign nationals, while the third is Indonesian, according to Abdul Muhari, Head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre. The search operation has focused on an area suspected to be the location of the victims, with the two foreign nationals detected 20 to 30 meters from the main crater’s rim.
BNPB reported that the two foreign climbers have been found, but challenging terrain and high volcanic activity at Mount Dukono have delayed evacuation efforts. However, the Indonesian climber remains unaccounted for. Despite the closure of the Mount Dukono hiking route since April 17, regret was expressed by BNPB over the climbing activity. The agency emphasized the importance of disseminating information about the route closure to hiking operators and the public to avoid violations that could lead to sanctions and ensure public safety.
Mount Dukono erupted on Friday morning, sending a massive column of volcanic ash approximately 10 km into the sky. Tragically, three individuals lost their lives due to the sudden eruption, as confirmed by local police. Authorities have issued warnings for residents to stay at least 4 km away from the crater and be cautious of potential volcanic mudflows during rainfall. Standing at 1,087 meters above sea level, Mount Dukono is among Indonesia’s 127 active volcanoes.
