Senator Tom Cotton has urged the Justice Department to investigate a network associated with the Chinese Communist Party for undermining the development of American AI infrastructure. Cotton highlighted concerns about foreign actors shaping US policy on data centres, crucial in the global AI race. Emphasizing the importance of US leadership in AI, Cotton stated that it is vital for economic strength, national security, and military power.
Cotton recognized public concerns regarding data centres’ impact on energy consumption and resources. While advocating for regulations to address these concerns, he cautioned against foreign exploitation. Cotton raised alarm over a foreign influence campaign, allegedly funded by a Shanghai-based American expatriate with ties to the Chinese government, opposing American AI infrastructure development.
The senator pointed out that the network, reportedly funded by the Chinese government, has been working against American AI infrastructure while China advances its own AI goals. Cotton alleged that foreign-funded organizations have directed substantial funds to US groups opposing data-centre projects. He also mentioned a Senate event on AI, where Chinese government affiliates were prominent, urging the DOJ to investigate the matter.
