The government of Senegal has strongly criticized the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) move to take away Senegal’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and give it to Morocco. Senegal denounced the decision as “grossly illegal” and “deeply unjust.” In response, Senegal demanded an investigation into alleged corruption within the CAF, expressing deep dismay over the decision.
Senegal emphasized that the decision erases the team’s commitment, merit, and sporting excellence, rejecting what it called an unjustified dispossession. The government of Senegal vowed to pursue all necessary avenues of appeal, including international judicial bodies, to restore justice and uphold the importance of the sporting outcome. Additionally, Senegal called for an independent international probe into suspected corruption within the CAF’s leadership.
The controversy arose from the AFCON 2025 final in Morocco, where a complaint led to disciplinary actions. Despite an initial ruling in favor of Senegal by the CAF’s disciplinary board, the decision was overturned by the appeals committee. Senegal had won the final against Morocco 1-0, but the match was marred by a penalty controversy that led to the game being awarded to Morocco as a 3-0 forfeit victory.
