Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera visited the Crime Branch office in Guwahati on Wednesday regarding a case filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Khera cooperated with the investigation, following a grant of anticipatory bail by the Supreme Court in the same matter.
Khera expressed his trust in the legal system and commitment to complying with the law during a brief interaction with the media outside the Crime Branch office. The case originated from Khera’s public accusations against Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, alleging possession of multiple foreign passports and financial interests abroad.
The complaint against Khera, lodged by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station, involves various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections cover offenses such as false statements related to elections, cheating, forgery, and defamation.
Khera’s legal journey included transit anticipatory bail granted by the Telangana High Court, which was later stayed by the Supreme Court. Despite subsequent efforts for relief, including a plea to the Gauhati High Court for anticipatory bail, the legal proceedings have continued. Searches at Khera’s Delhi residence and investigative actions in Hyderabad were also conducted by the Assam Police as part of the ongoing probe.
