Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi passed away in Pune at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness. Kalmadi, a key figure in Indian sports administration, had served as the president of the Indian Olympic Association and held significant positions in politics.
Born on May 1, 1944, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Kalmadi had a strong political career representing Pune in Parliament. He had roots in Mangalore, Karnataka, and received his education in Pune, Maharashtra, before entering military training at the National Defence Academy.
Kalmadi’s political journey began in 1982 when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an Independent member. He later aligned with the Indian National Congress and served multiple terms in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. His tenure faced challenges with corruption allegations related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Despite legal issues, Kalmadi continued his involvement in sports administration, notably as the president of the Indian Olympic Association. His contributions were recognized with awards, including the Asian Athletics Association President’s Award for his role in promoting athletics in Asia.
