Senior DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Finance Minister P. Thiaga Rajan (PTR) has announced his temporary withdrawal from active politics following the party’s loss in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He expressed his intention to take a short break after serving in elected office for a decade. Reflecting on the election results and the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, PTR shared his plan to spend time away from public life and reconnect as a private citizen.
This break will provide him with the opportunity to explore endeavors that were previously inaccessible during his public service years, such as delivering lectures and participating in events in India and abroad. Additionally, PTR disclosed his intention to focus on writing a book and prioritize his health and well-being as he enters his sixties. Despite stepping back temporarily, he emphasized that this decision does not signify a permanent exit from politics.
While acknowledging that he will not hold an elected position until the next election, PTR affirmed his enduring commitment to public service and driving positive change. He assured his supporters of his return, revitalized and re-energized. PTR has been a prominent figure in the DMK, known for his vocal stance on governance and economic policies. Elected from the Madurai Central constituency in 2016 and re-elected in 2021, he served as the Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management after the DMK’s victory in 2021.
During his tenure, PTR published a White Paper outlining Tamil Nadu’s financial status and debt situation. Despite being reassigned to the Information Technology and Digital Services portfolio in 2023, PTR faced a setback in the 2026 elections, losing his seat to TVK candidate Madhar Badhurudeen. Badhurudeen secured a substantial victory with over 19,000 votes more than PTR.
